Can a lower-fee fund actually cost clients more in the end?
A lower expense ratio can help clients keep more of their return. It does not automatically mean a fund is the most thoughtful choice for the portfolio.
A fund can look inexpensive on paper and still add very little that is distinct in terms of exposure, research, or investment discipline. An expense ratio can show advisors what a fund costs. But it cannot explain how the strategy works, what exposure it adds, or what role it is meant to play in the portfolio.

Look Beyond the Expense Ratio
For advisors, fund fees should be one part of the evaluation, not the whole decision. A sustainable strategy should still be evaluated on:- ✔️ Fund fee
- ✔️ Investment process
- ✔️ Portfolio role
- ✔️ Real estate exposure
- ✔️ Sustainability research
- ✔️ Stewardship
- ✔️ Reporting
- ✔️ Advisor and client fit

What’s at Stake
Fee compression across mutual funds and ETFs has changed expectations. Lower-cost solutions are easier to find, and that is not a bad thing. But it can also make funds look more interchangeable than they really are. Cost comparison should lead to a broader question: what is this fund actually doing in the portfolio? If a strategy does not add differentiated exposure, improve asset allocation, or bring a clear investment discipline, the portfolio may be giving something up in exchange for a lower fee.For more insights on sustainable real estate, portfolio construction, and advisor education, follow Vert on Linkedin.
